The Bey's* former train, Lezard Rouge, transports you through the magnificent canyons of the Gorges of Selja - the highlight of our three day desert tour exploring the sights and sounds of the Sahara Desert. Road transport is by comfortable 4x4 vehicles with driver and a professional guide.
This 3 day private tour of Southern Tunisia is available to tourists staying at any hotel in the resorts of Hammamet, Yasmine Hammamet, Port El Kantaoui, Sousse and Skanes/Monastir.
We suggest departing on a Monday, Thursday or Saturday.
We depart early in the morning from your resort hotel for our first stop in Kairouan - the 4th holiest city in Islam after Mecca and a UNESCO World Heritage site: visit the Great Mosque, the Mosque of the Three Doors in the Medina and Kairouan's souks. Next we travel to Gafsa - centre of the profitable Phosphate industry. Gafsa is a modern town with some important Roman relics. The Roman pools, the Kasbah and traditional quarters are both interesting and appealing. Take lunch in Gafsa before continuing your journey south towards the Sahara and the oasis town of Tozeur. There will be time for an optional horse and carriage ride to the oasis - supplement payable through your tour guide before dinner and overnight at the Hotel Ras El Ain, Tozeur.
After breakfast we take you to the railway station at Metlaoui for your train journey through the Gorges of Selja aboard the Red Lizard. The six coach train, including the Bey's private coach, has a bar car where refreshments are available for purchase. At the end of this 90 minute journey of spectacular scenery we stop for lunch in Tozeur. In the afternoon travel continue by 4x4 across the Chott El Jerid Salt Lake to the Sahara gateway town of Douz. Dinner and overnight at the Hotel Mehari Douz with the opportunity to join a sunset camel ride into the Sahara (supplement payable via the tour guide).
Matmata is our first stop after breakfast - home to the Troglodyte cave dwellers. Here you can visit a family home and the Hotel Sidi Driss which featured in the original Star Wars movie. Then travel to the maritime oasis town of Gabes where you can visit the Spice Market. Take lunch in Gabes then continue your journey north, via Sfax, to the town of El Djem.
