Suggested Itinerary:
Day One Tunis | Bardo | Carthage | Sidi Bou Said | Tunis
Visit to the Medina of Tunis (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the Zitouna Mosque and then visit the famous Roman collection of mosaics in the Museum of Bardo. On to Sidi Bou Said and its pretty blue and white architecture for lunch. In the afternoon an extensive tour of Carthage visiting Byrsa Hill, Antonine Baths, the Tophet and the Punic Ports. Dinner and overnight in Tunis.
Day Two Korbous | El Haouaria | Kerkouane | Kelibia | Nabeul | Bacchus | Tunis
Breakfast. Today we travel through the region of Cap Bon - the "Garden of Tunisia". We first visit the hot springs at Korbous and then travel to El Haouaria where stone was quarried in both the Phoenician and Roman times. See the Phoenician ruins at Kerkouane before continuning on to the Port of Kelibia which has an interesting fort. After lunch we travel to the town of Nabeul - famous for its arts and crafts - where you will visit a museum. We end the day with a wine tasting tour at Chateau Bacchus, that overlooks vast vineyards in the wine producing region of Grombalia, before returning to Tunis for dinner and overnight stay at Hotel Majestic.
Day Three Zaghouan | Thuburbo Majus | Dougga | Teboursouk
Breakfast. Explore more Roman history today on our tour visiting Zaghouan and its Temple of Waters and to Thuburbo Majus, originally a Berber village rebuilt by the Romans with a number of imposing ruins, and finally Dougga one of the most important Roman sites in North Africa. Lunch at Hotel Thugga. Dinner and overnight in Teboursouk.
Day Four Bulla Regia | Chemtou | Ain Drahem
Breakfast. Set in rich agricultural country is Bulla Regia and important city in Roman times with a maze of ruins. We take lunch in Jendouba before travelling to Chemtou (formally Simitthus) famous for a particular red and yellow Marble greatly treasured by the Romans. At Ain Drahem you can escape from the heat of a traditional Tunisian summer in this Alpine-style resort amidst cork forests. Dinner and overnight in Ain Drahem.
Day Five Makthar |Sbeitla | Kairouan
Breakfast. Situated at over 3000 feet, the ancient ruins of Makthar rank among the most interesting monuments in Tunisia. Continue to Sbeitla and take lunch at Hotel Sufetula before visiting ancient Sufetula, where there are extensive Roman ruins. Travel to the Holy City of Kairouan. Dinner and overnight in Kairouan.
Day Six Kairouan | El Djem | (Your chosen resort)
Breakfast. Founded in 671 by Okba Ibn Nafaa and located in the centre of Tunisia, Kairouan by the 9th century had become a flourishing capital, housing stately monuments. We spend the morning in Kairouan and take lunch before travelling to El Djem for a visit to the magnificent Roman amphitheatre.
