Often compared to the French Riviera the Carthage Coast is located to the north of Tunis in an area with 20 km of beach and features the more sophisticated resorts of Sidi Bou Said, Gammarth and La Marsa. Ideal for travellers seeking a resort based holiday, but with easy access to the hustle and bustle of Tunis. Sidi Bou Said, often described as an artist's paradise, is a very pretty village with blue and white stepped houses situated on a headland overlooking the Mediterranean. It is a popular haunt for tourists who come far and wide to visit its cobbled streets with shops, cafes and restaurants. Gammarth is a seaside resort which has developed over recent years with modern hotels alongside superb sandy beaches. La Marsa is a famous Tunisian seaside resort featuring a promenade lined with French colonial villas and a number of hotels and classy restaurants. Do visit the curious Saf Saf café which has its own well.

What to see: Even if you're are not staying in Sidi Bou Said you must take a stroll through the village to admire the domes, arched doors and balconies, many adorned with colourful flowers. The innumerable ruins of Carthage is the major attraction and in the summer you can enjoy concerts in the amphitheatre. A sense of history prevails as you take in events embracing the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans. Worth a visit is the National Museum of Carthage which has exhibits of tomb sculptures.

Where to go: It's so close you just cannot miss the opportunity to visit the capital city of Tunis. (trains run every 20 minutes) Try one of the many fish restaurants in the port of La Goulette and do take a quick look at the Kasbah built in 1535 by Charles V of Spain.

Restaurant Golf de Carthage: Located just ten minutes away from the Carthage resorts the Golf de Carthage is a small compact course of 18 holes (4,524 metres) surrounded by eucalyptus, pine, cypress, palm, olive and orange trees. A great deal of accuracy is required to achieve par for the course which is 66. Facilities include driving range, putting green, recently redecorated club house with changing rooms, bar and restaurant. Equipment is available for hire. Tee-off time and green fees can be prepaid in the UK.
