Djerba

Well known for its temperate winters and long hot summers, the sun-blessed island of Djerba has miles of unspoilt beaches lapped by the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean.

Flights to Djerba operate twice weekly from London Gatwick on a Monday and Thursday. Alternatively you can take a connecting flight on the daily service between Tunis and Djerba.*

We can arrange a multitude of tours including twin-centre holidays combining the mainland of Tunisia, connected by causeway and half hourly ferries, with a relaxing holiday in Djerba.

Djerba's fine hotels are concentrated along the coastal touristic route on the north-east shore. The island's capital, Houmt Souk features Hôtel Arischa - a three century old foundouk.

What to see and do

There are many places to visit on this low-lying island endowed by palm trees and olive groves. Djerba is also an ideal base for exploring the Great South and the timeless sands of the Sahara Desert.

  • Overlooking the sea is the 15th century fortress Borj el Kebir.
  • The Festival of Ulysses celebrates the songs,
    dances and traditions of the island in August.
  • The Ghriba synagogue serves the Jewish community on the island and is a popular place of pilgrimage every May.
  • Make a visit to Houmt Souk, the islands capital, for its bustling marketplace and daily fish auction.
  • The pottery village of Guellala, where potters still craft ceramics by hand.

Desert Safaris

Arranged through our agent or booked in advance, desert tours can include a visit to Matmata - the troglodyte village that featured in the original Star Wars film, the remote Berber community at Chenini and the mysterious cliff top villages of the Ksour region.

Further afield you can visit Douz, gateway town of the Sahara, the oasis town of Tozeur near to another Star Wars film set at Onc El Jemel.

Golf

There is an 18-hole championship golf club close to the touristic zone that also features a 9-hole practise course.
