The resort of Skanes with its seemingly endless sandy beach has been welcoming British holidaymakers for many years. As a suburb of its more famous neighbour Monastir, Skanes is ideal for holidaymakers seeking a relaxing beach holiday. Monastir is privileged as the birth-place of former President Bourguiba. Located near the site of the Roman town Ruspina, it is typically Arab in atmosphere and surrounded by a wall and battlements with small square towers. The Ribat may look familiar as it has been used in the making of several films, including Monty Python's Life of Brian and the Raiders of the Lost Ark as well as the TV series Jesus of Nazareth. A modern marina and a very different looking Medina compliment the list of amenities.
Where to go: Close by is Sousse with its old Medina and important port, which is easily reached by a train service from Monastir. Kairouan, the capital of the Aghlabid dynasty with its great mosque and El Djem with its gigantic Roman amphitheatre are both within easy travelling distance.
