Mahdia (transfer time from Djerba Airport 30 minutes)

Just across the causeway from the Island of Djerba is the hitherto little known seaside resort of Zarzis. Surrounded on three sides by endless olive and palm groves the small town of Zarzis has something of a colonial style about it, which probably has something to do with the fact that Tunisia was once a French protectorate. Tourist development here is small scale with just a few hotels scattered along the coastline just north of the town, making Zarzis ideal for those holidaymakers seeking a "Get away from it all" type of holiday. From Zarzis you can easily visit Djerba by driving across the causeway which connects the island with the mainland. Zarzis is an ideal place from which to explore the southern part of Tunisia and in particular the timeless sands of the Sahara.

What to see: Apart from traditional local life in the town you should take time out to visit Djerba and in particular Houmt Souk, the islands capital with its bustling marketplace and daily fish auction.

Where to go: Desert Safaris can be arranged through our agent and these will be sure to include a visit to the troglodyte village of Matmata which featured in the original Star Wars film, the remote Berber community at Chenini, the market town of Tataouine and the mysterious cliff top villages of the Ksour region. Further afield you can visit Douz, gateway town of the Sahara and the oasis town of Tozeur.
